Stuck tailgate

The tailgate on my 2001 Silverado 1500 short bed stepside won't open.  I can hear the latch release, but the gate won't release and open.  Worked fine a few days ago.  No damage or accident.  Any clues?  Thanks

If there is nothing caught in the latch mechanism and there is no physical damage the latch may have come apart internally (which I have never seen before). I assume you have tried giving it a little extra "umph" to get the gate open? You may need to take it to a place of repair from there.
