‘Tis the Season…

3534i145AB3010A55E920With the year winding to a close, the sounds of bells chiming signals the inevitable—the holidays are upon us. Bring on the good times with friends and family, delicious holiday treats that compromise our waistline, and all the holiday cheer you can consume.

This year, before you start making a list and checking it twice, take time to remember those in your own community who face this holiday season without the means to celebrate.3538i93DDA439FF055588

Non-Monetary Means

Volunteering your time can be extremely rewarding. You can start with a local church or food bank. This is a great project to teach children the meaning of giving back during the holidays.

Food for Thought

With time always running short during the holidays, monetary donations or tangible items are still always in need. See what your local shelter needs or box up canned goods to drop off.

If you host or attend an annual holiday party, suggest that guests all bring a non-perishable food item or unwrapped children’s toy to donate to a charity in your area.

Here are some of my favorite sites to help you get a jump-start on volunteering for the holidays:

The Holiday Project

Volunteering doesn’t have to be a holiday tradition, it can even be a year round action. Does anyone have any tips to share?

Don't forget your local animal shelters and rescue groups!  Although most do need donations of money, food, towels and toys the best way you can help is to give an hour or two of your time working with the animals.  We clean, feed, walk and spend time with the animals.  Many have been lost, abandoned or surrendered by their owners and need extra love and attention as we prepare them for adoption.  You will meet new people who share your love of animals and maybe even find a new pet best friend!
