Chirp, Chirp…The Lighter Side of AAA

illustrated car.jpgSince AAA has been helping folks by the side of the road for over 100 years, you can imagine that there have been some unusual, and often somewhat comical situations which have arisen. Here’s a recent story that was shared with us. A driver was called for an elderly member who vehicle was making an unusual chirping sound.  Presuming it was a bad belt or pullet, a service technician was sent to identify the sound, and possibly tow the member to a local shop.

Upon arrival, the technician greeted the woman who was standing near the car and “How long has the car been making this strange sound?”

She responded, “Just today.”

He asked, “Did the car make the sound while it was running or turned off?”

“Only when it’s turned off, but you can’t hear it from here,” she said.

Puzzled, the technician reasoned to himself that the sound must be coming from the dash inside. “Possibly a bad fuse or switch,” he thought. He turned from the member and approached the driverside door.

Watching the AAA tech walk around the car, the member said, “Wait, you can’t hear it from there either.”

He paused, ““Okay, where do you hear the chirping?” “

“You can hear it from in here,” she pointed to the front door and started heading into the house.

He sized the up the situation, and determined that it was safe to follow. He entered the house. Once inside, she said frantically, “Wait, did you hear that…did you hear it!?”

He paused uncomfortably, he didn’t hear a thing. He shook his head no. She told him to sit down on the couch.

As he began to sit on the center cushion she corrected him again, “No, no, here! You have to sit here!” She directed him to the cushion seated to the far right.

She leaned forward go him, “Now just wait a minute and you will hear it.”

His mind coursed through different options. “How do I handle this, How do I tell her I can’t hear what she’s

hearing?”

When suddenly, “CHIRP, CHIRP, CHIRP.”

Elated, the technician said, “I hear it! Oh, I hear it!” The chirping sound matched that of a car locking and unlocking. He jumped up and ran out the front door to confirm his suspicion that the sound was not coming from outside.

 No sound. Nothing.

He stood in the living room and waited. CHIRP. CHIRP. CHIRP. The sound was definitely coming from

inside of the house. CHIRP. CHIRP. CHIRP. He moved toward the dining room. CHIRP. CHIRP. CHIRP. He got on his hands and knees. CHIRP. CHIRP. CHIRP. It was coming from underneath the table. He reached in, and his hand grasped at something. Using all of his experience and skill as a professional wrecker operator, he successfully extracted this mysterious chirping object from under the table. He opened his hand and to reveal the mysterious source of the sound.

“Ma’am, I think you have some voice-mails.”

Hahahaha Oh my god, I loved that story! That's hilarious! I don't know why it made me think of it, but I had this situation once where an elderly lady arrived at my doorstep with a cardboard shoebox. "It's an injured snake." she said, "I think one of those crazy kids might have run it over with his bike." I assured her I would do all I could for the snake (I'm a wildlife rehabber, although usually I just handle mammals) and she left, feeling as if she'd done all she could to help. After she left, I took the box into the kitchen and slowly opened the lid to check how badly the snake was injured. It was very still. Dead? No, just rubber. lol

Both stories are awfully funny. Petgirl's reminded me of my own snake story. My husband had heard that if you put rubber snakes around your garden, you can ward off rabbits. So we put fake snakes all around the perimeter of our garden one summer and promptly forgot about them. Sometime during that summer, my mother came down to get some extra basil for some pesto. She jumped more than a foot when she saw one of the snakes.  She has a true snake phobia, and if we'd remembered we would have warned her. She has never touched our garden since, even though we have long since removed the snakes!

My husband came home last summer and thought the the neighborhood kids had left a hose or something in the driveway.  Fortunately he stopped to check it out.  It was two large black snakes mating!  My neighbor came out to see what we were looking at and when we told her what it was she asked if we wanted her to kill them!  Of course we said no (black snakes aren't poisonous and kill all kinds of vermin).  I'm glad I don't mind snakes, although I've never been tempted to keep one as a pet.

I know someone who had a boa constrictor as a pet. When she had to move to another state, she took the snake with her on the plane! While she was waiting in the airport, she alternately kept the snake around her waist and in a gym bag. This was obviously long before the strict scruting at all airports now. At one point, one of the airline's employees pointed to her waist and tried to get her attention.  She was sure that some part of the snake was exposed and that she was busted. Instead the employee pointed again at her waist and said, "Miss, you have some money falling out of your pocket!" You can imagine her relief. However, I still can't believe she actually transported her snake this way. I always think of this whenever I travel now.

So a snake around the waist would be kind of like a spare tire? lol She could have just said with a straight face, "I'm trying to lose the weight, okay? Don't make me feel bad about it."  I laughed at all your stories. So funny! And I must admit, I've never seen two snakes mating? How can you even tell? Were they making funny noises? Haha
