Peep Show

by Community Manager on 04-06-2011 05:38 PM - last edited on 04-07-2011 09:24 AM

peeps colors.jpgPeeps are produced by Just Born, a family-owned candy manufacturer located in Bethlehem, PA.  Peeps first began when Just Born acquired the Rodda Candy Company in 1953. Rodda was known for their jelly bean technology, but also for a small line of marshmallow products. The Just Born folks used the marshmallow concept to begin making their first Easter Peeps. These were created by laboriously hand-squeezing marshmallow through pastry tubes and hand-painting the eyes.

peeps being made.jpgFast forward to modern times... Today the Just Born candy gurus are still the only game around when it comes to Peeps. They make more than 1 billion per year or 4 million per day. Peeps come in yellow, pink, white, orange, lavender (in 1995) peeps_peepsters_and_chocolate_covered_peeps.jpgand blue (in 1998).  During Easter, Peeps outsell jelly beans.

Newest products:  Try their Peeps dipped in Chocolate and their Peepsters (bite-sized chocolate and marshmallow morsels).  fan club.jpg

Sandy Peeps.jpgI love 'em also...You're right, talk about sugar overload!  Here's my little Peeps character I created in their Peeps "world".   You can pick your color, outfit, accessories and location...

I don't know if they have them in other places, but there is a Peeps store at the National Harbor in Maryland, right on the Potomac.  They have an absolutely amazing selection of Peeps art, Tshirts, toys, and of course, Peeps!  If you ever get to that area, you should check it out.

I love Peeps, too, but even with my sweet tooth, I can only manage one or two at a time! I can't believe how low the calorie count is, but I imagine the amount of sugar is over the moon!

Those things are a diabetic coma waiting to happen! lol One of my boys absolutely loves them and every year his easter basket wouldn't be complete without them. But what I find funny is that they are no longer merely a candy - there is a whole culture attached to them with merchandising, video games, etc. Last year my son made an elaborate disco dance floor for his peeps, lining a cardboard box with shiny silver contact paper and adding decorations and a "disco ball" made of aluminum foil with strings. Then his peeps all had a sort of school dance together and paired off. And THEN he ate them. Haha

Ah, back in the old days I could eat  those things all day long.  *sigh....  Just one now would give me a headache, I think!  But, they have no fat....  hmmmm   I'm feelin' peckish...  heh
