Karl, The true story of a sad Bearded Dragon…

karl 7.jpgOnce upon a time there was a little girl named Sarah. She learned about bearded dragons in school and begged her mother for one. Bearded dragons are large lizards that are friendly. Eventually mom relented and “Karl” became a part of the household.

Sarah played with Karl, she fed him spinach and special food. She cleaned his cage. She took him for walks on a leash. But sadly, as Sarah grew up, her interest in Karl slowly declined.

Throughout high school, Karl was relegated to the occasional petting and stroll. When Sarah left for college, there was no one for Karl to play with. Her mom cleaned his cage and sprayed him with his beloved water bottle everyday. But whenever someone walked by, Karl looked up, hopeful that someone would stop and pay attention to him.

One day when Sarah was home for the weekend, her mom said, “Karl needs more attention than you can give him. We need to find him a new home.”

Both mom and Sarah agreed that they couldn’t just give him to the pet store or advertise for a new owner. It had to be someone special who would love Karl as she had.

One day soon after, Sarah’s dad came home with good news. Someone at work had a six-year-old niece who loved bearded dragons. She would be thrilled if we would let her adopt Karl as her own.

And so Sarah packed up Karl and Karl 4ajpg.jpgall his things. They all gave him hugs…they shed a few tears…and off he went to his new family.Pic1.jpg

Soon after the pictures began to arrive. “Janie” loved Karl…and Karl loved her.

He appeared happier than he had in a long time. Janie walked him, she hugged him, she petted him, she sprayed him with his water bottle…Karl was happy once again….and so were both families.

Janie's vet told them that Karl was really a girl...

but she kept the name Karl since he was used to it.

Janie put a picture of Sarah up near his cage...

in case he missed her!

So glad Karl found a new friend to brighten his days and that Sarah found that perfect friend for him.  I hope Janie & Karl have many years together.

What a cute story!  I was concerned when I read the title "...sad bearded dragon" but intrigued.  Love stories with happy endings - made me think of the last "Toy Story" movie.

How sweet. It's wonderful when pets are relocated to a new home where they can get the kind of attention they need and deserve.

I know several families who went to the local pound and got a dog that really didn't thrive in the conditions in their homes. In each case. the families found homes where there was more room to roam or more attention available for the dog during the day. It's always heartening to hear that people will take their pets' needs to heart and if they can't provide for them themselves, they are willing to look elsewhere.

my daughter raises bearded dragons and they all have very different personalities. They all have one thing in common and that is they love attention. They are so smart and just love it when you play with them. They quickly learn their names and where you hide the crickets that are their dinner!!!

What a great story! I was worried from the title that the story would end sadly, but delighted that Karl ended up going to a new home that would give her the attention she deserved. It's lovely that her previous owners were able to be wise enough to grab at a way to meet Karl's needs. Yay! I have volunteered for animal shelters and seen so many hundreds of animals just dumped for the stupidest of reasons

I don't have an affinity for lizards, myself.  I think they are cool to see, but I prefer my cats and dogs, thanks very much.  Still, glad to see that there are still thoughtfull people out there who can value their pets as more than another darned chore to do.  Well done.

I would have said that I'm more of a furry pet person too, but a couple of days ago I saw a picture of a baby alligator that my college daughter was holding, and had to admit that he was quite beautiful in terms of his markings, his eyes, the chubby tummy. I guess pets are about whatever resonates with you since it's really all about the relationship. I've also noticed that there is a huge upsurge in the sale of exotic pets these days. Do you think people are just getting bored with dogs and cats? Do you think they want the cachet of being able to say they have a (fill in the blank with whatever was just imported from Australia)?? What's that all about?
