The Gallery of HUGE Beings…

by Community Manager on 05-03-2011 05:21 PM

hbhappychef5.jpgScattered along America’s roadside are a collection of larger-than-life concrete and fiberglass gi-normous human figures. Some honor actual people while others tirelessly entice us to buy tires, get gas and eat at Joes…   (Photo right: Happy Chef, Cherokee, Iowa)

I don't know if the following counts because it's not a figure but it is a LARGE roadside attraction.  A friend in Columbus, Ohio said there was an enormous building there which perfectly replicated an enormous Longaberger basket. People could see it from the highway and apparently it caused a number of  crashes!! I think my friend reported that they had to create some sort of visual barrier so that people didn't keep rubbernecking and causing accidents.

A giant ball of yarn in Cawker City, Kansas, or the car sculpture Cadillac ranch in Amarillo Texas

The life-size chocolate moose somewhere in southern Maine. lol I wonder what has stopped people from chipping at it with a small axe at night? Haha

I would be one of those people chipping away at that chocolate moose!  Tell me where it is exactly and I'll put it on my To Do list:smileyhappy:.

Now that you mention it, a chocolate moose seems infinitely more palatable than a bunch of half-buried cars.  What was I thinking?   I wonder, what if each state had an Giant Edible Attraction that it featured?  I suppose Maine would have to replace the Moose with a Lobster.  I'd better be careful suggesting a departure from Chocolate!

On I-4, just west of Plant City, Florida, there are 5 or 6 Airstream Travel Trailers planted in the ground.  It makes me laugh everytime I drive by there, especially because the "powers that be" want them removed, but they're on private property.  Good advertisement for the Airstream dealer, just down the road from there!

Excellent idea, Rafferty! Maine could have a giant maple sugar leaf or giant statue of a lobster (a real one would just terrorize traffic on Rte. 1). Maryland could have a Chesapeake Bay Blue Crab. Georgie could have a huge clear container of sweet tea. Lousiana could have the Beignet (much more appealing visually than a crayfish). How about here in the South? What do you guys think?

I wonder, would driving through a huge 'Gator tunnel be too much for people?  :-P  I kinda like the idea...  heheh
