I woiuld like to know why is it that when using a company discount; ie: AAA or Spirit Air,  the price of renting a car (Hertz) is higher with the discount than it is when I go directly to Hertz without my special discount

I can't speak for Spirit Air, but I decided to take you up on the AAA question. Here's what I did:

I chose Asheville, NC, from Jan. 5 to Jan. 9.

At Hertz.com I got a rate of: Economy $29.49/day,  Intermediate $31.49/day, Full size $33.49/day

At AAA.com/Hertz I got a rate of: Economy $18/day, Intermediate $19/day, Full size $20/day

Please note, at AAA.com/Hertz there is a scrolling window that lists AAA offers and their promo codes. I chose the double upgrade option, but there were also options for $60 off a weekly rental, $75 off a weekly economy rental, free day on a weekend, etc. Different AAA offers come and go and different times, which gives a lot of flexibility in car choice.

So the difference for my 5 day trip would have been about $62 saved for an intermediate vehicle. For me, that's significant!
